Hands-on science in the Hanseatic city
"I wouldn't have thought it!" is probably the most common phrase uttered by tourists visiting Bremen for the first time. A city that amazes its visitors - and does so with full intent. Here, they know how to perfectly harmonize information and entertainment.
Is it a silver whale or a shell? Even the building of the Universum Bremen arouses curiosity. The eye-catching building with its shiny shingles has over 300 exhibits to touch, participate in and experiment with on the topics of man, nature and technology. The outdoor area, Germany's first open-air site of its kind, is particularly exciting for younger visitors with its stations on the subject of movement.
A green world of experience is located in the middle of the magnificent scenery of Bremen's Rhododendron Park - the botanika. With its diversity and fascination, the botanika invites visitors to make extraordinary discoveries in three stages: Japanese Garden, Himalaya/Borneo and Discovery Center. The authentically recreated adventure landscapes show the natural habitat of the rhododendron at the center of an exotic world of plants and animals.
Just a stone's throw from the main railway station, the Übersee-Museum Bremen unites "the whole world under one roof". It is one of the world's leading museums for natural history, ethnology and trade and is based on the treasures that Bremen merchants brought back from their trading voyages around the world. With its 9,000 square meters of exhibition space, it is Germany's largest integrated museum for non-European countries.
Experience knowledge in the seaside city
Imparting knowledge and bringing it to life in an authentic and entertaining way form the foundations of the worlds of knowledge and experience. The Climate House, the German Emigration Center, the Zoo by the Sea and the German Maritime Museum are all located within easy reach of each other in the Havenwelten.
In the Klimahaus, visitors embark on a journey around the world and experience with all their senses the effects that different climate zones have on people. In 2024, weather extremes will be added to the permanent exhibition. There are also special exhibitions every year.
In 2007, the German Emigration Center (Deutsches Auswandererhaus), which was founded two years earlier and is dedicated to the topic of migration, was crowned "European Museum of the Year" and expanded in 2021 with a new building. In addition to the original approach of showing the fates and consequences of emigration, the permanent exhibition was expanded to include a separate complex on immigration.
The German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum) houses the world's best-preserved merchant ship from the Middle Ages, the Bremen cog from 1380. The submarine "Wilhelm Bauer" is moored in the Old Harbour in front of the museum and is also open to visitors as a technical museum. The Historical Museum on the banks of the Geeste is dedicated to the history of Bremerhaven and the surrounding area and can be visited free of charge.
In Germany's smallest public zoo, the Zoo am Meer, visitors can experience the fauna of the northern hemisphere. The associated North Sea Aquarium presents the underwater world of the northern latitudes. Spacious enclosures and panoramic windows make it easy to observe the animals above and below the water.
