“Come with us to Bremen, there’s no better place to be.” This is how the Bremen Town Musicians might sing the city’s praises today, immortalized as heroes of world literature in front of Bremen’s 600-year-old town hall, a World Heritage site. Home to some 550,000 people, Bremen is the tenth-largest city in Germany. Together with its twin city Bremerhaven, it forms the smallest federal state in the country. lt is a place of contrasts that likes to surprise visitors. Though it is a city of traditions with a 1,200-year history, a fairytale connection and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bremen is also a European center for aerospace, a city of science and home to the Überseestadt district, one of the largest urban development projects in Europe.
Bremerhaven makes diversity tangible! The city is a world port, gateway to the North Sea, a tourist hot spot and a science location all at the same time. Bremerhaven is located in one of the most beautiful vacation regions in Germany. Likewise, it is one of the largest automobile transshipment locations and number four among Europe's container ports, as well as home to several research institutes of international standing. Moreover, Bremerhaven is the only place in the world where climate change and migration, two very important topics of our time, are presented in the Knowledge and Adventure Worlds, thus making these topics and their consequences clearly vivid.
If you value individuality in Bremen, Bremerhaven and other cities in Germany and Austria, ATLANTIC Hotels are the right choice for you. Whether a group trip, an individual vacation, a business trip, an event or a conference, the ATLANTIC hotels offer customers the right setting.
Bremen, a city of understand and beauty
Here on the banks of the Weser river, the vision of urban living at its finest has become reality. A 20-minute walk is all it takes to cover the historical city center. In Bremen, everything is just around the corner. Stroll downriver along the Schlachte Embankment to the newest district, Überseestadt, a captivating blend of industrial dockland architecture and a modern waterfront combining commerce, culture and riverside living. Or stroll upriver through 0stertor and into the Viertel district, the more bohemian part of Bremen, where people live life to the full.
World Heritage site
Bremen’s market square is at the heart of the city’s old town, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Germany. lt comprises the town hall and Roland statue (a joint World Heritage site, St Peter’s Cathedral, the Schütting guildhall, historical gabled houses and the visually contrasting modern State Parliament (Haus der Bürgerschaft).
In true Hanseatic fashion, an understated tribute to the famous Bremen Town Musicians is tucked away beside the town hall. It is undoubtedly the most photographed site in Bremen.
The Viertel quarter, which is located right by the city’s old quarter, is the very essence of vibrant urban life. As well as a whole host of independent shops, it features cafés and restaurants offering international cuisine, clubs, artist studios and craft workshops, plus beautifully preserved terraced houses and grand homes.
Quintessential Bremen: like many major art or cultural projects, the 200-hectare Bürgerpark is privately funded, but open to the public. The city boasts a total of roughly 2,600 hectares of parks and green spaces, providing a haven for recreation and relaxation away from the daily bustle of a hard-working city.
Strength in numbers: The Bremen Town Musicians reloaded
When faced with a problem, just think like an old donkey. It’s all about having a vision, as demonstrated by the first of the Bremen Town Musicians, the donkey. At the start of his journey he has to make a rational assessment of his situation: I am facing a challenge and I must take action to overcome it — by having the courage to leave for pastures new. So the donkey sets out to become a musician. 0n his travels he meets companions who share his misfortune and he persuades them to join him by explaining his vision of a better life in Bremen.
The intrepid quartet remains flexible and adapts its goal to the ever-changing circumstances. Though they don’t make it all the way to Bremen, they forge a new life together as a band of brothers. That’s why they still earn the right to call themselves the Bremen Town Musicians.
And so the story of the Town Musicians perfectly captures the spirit of Bremen past and present. The original fable is found in one of the world’s most read and most translated German-language books, ‘Children’s and Household Tales’ by the Brothers Grimm. The statue of the donkey, dog, cat and rooster, created by sculptor Gerhard Marcks, stands proudly by the town hall that, together with the Roland statue, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The silhouette of these four animals has become an unmistakeable emblem of the city.
Sea to the horizon meets world natural heritage in Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven makes longing sensual! Because life here is typically North German fresh and at the same time as diverse as the crests of the waves in front of the dyke. There are plenty of seagull clamor and roaring North Sea surf for coastal lovers. A sea as far as the horizon right on the doorstep, the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea National Park directly nearby. The city is a genuine home port for lovers of faraway places and the ideal place to let the yearning ones become world discoverers. With the Columbus Cruise Center, one of the most modern cruise terminals in the world is located here.
Two major topics of our time excitingly packaged
In the tourism complex Havenwelten two of the currently most important topics are featured in a unique way. In the Klimahaus Bremerhaven (Climate Experience Center), you can take a trip around the world in one day. During this trip, the different climate zones are traversed and the direct consequences of one's own actions for climate change are made sensually evident. The Deutsches Auswandererhaus (German Emigration Center) is dedicated to the topic of migration. The theme museum, which was awarded the title "European Museum of the Year" in 2007, is the only museum in the world in which the fates, paths and consequences of emigration as well as immigration to and from Germany are made comprehensible - hands on.
Authentic proximity and history of the city as a strength
Bremerhaven's tourist attractions are characterized overall by their authentic proximity to the city and its urban development. The Zoo am Meer (Zoo at the Sea), the smallest public zoo in Germany, is located directly on the dyke. Here the animal world of the northern hemisphere is shown. The adjoining North Sea Aquarium allows a view of the underwater creatures of the northern latitudes. Not far away is the Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum) with its museum harbor. The Historisches Museum (Museum of Maritime History) is one of eight national research museums of the Leibniz Association in Germany. Inside, shipping and its development is impressively presented. The greatest treasure of the collection is the Bremen Cog dated 1380, the world's best preserved merchant ship of the Middle Ages, which can be seen in a specially constructed hall. The young and old history of Bremerhaven and the region can be seen in the Historical Museum, which is located on the banks of the River Geeste a stone's throw away from the Wencke Dock, one of the birthplaces of the city's shipbuilding tradition.
A lot to offer in terms of fish!
The fishery harbor is one of the most important centers for food production in Europe. It is still considered the most important fish processing port in Germany and even the world capital of fish sticks. Because of its outstanding role in the production of frozen foods - and not, as might be assumed, because of the Nordic cool temperament that is often attributed to the North Germans - Bremerhaven can be called the largest refrigerator in Europe. Much more significant, however, is the quality offered in Germany's fish Mecca. The freshness of the goods can be tasted at the Shop Window Fishery Harbor, a fish theme mile including gourmet restaurants, a museum ship and cultural venues.
